The Sight of Music

Despite taking five years of piano and three years of flute lessons as a child, I can’t play myself out of a paper bag. Well, that’s not entirely true. I can still play “Turkey in the Straw” and “Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring” on the piano from memory without messing up… too much. And I can blow out a decent rendition of the theme song from “Dallas” on the flute like an aging rock star. Do rock stars play the flute? In any event, memories of my days as a lackluster music student came flooding back recently when I was … Continue reading

Music and Movement: Entertainment at the Animal Kingdom

My earliest Disney memory that doesn’t have to do with the movies is of the Disney World Christmas Day Parade. That’s what I knew about Disney parks before I processed the whole theme park thing: I thought of parades featuring Disney characters. Of course now that I know more about Disney World I realize that my early assumptions about what the park meant weren’t so far off base; there are daily parades with various characters all over Disney World, and they’re not limited to the Magic Kingdom. The Animal Kingdom has in fact two of its own parades: Mickey’s Jammin’ … Continue reading

It’s hard to believe, but the adorable spawn of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes turns 3 on Saturday. Yup, Suri Cruise is getting to be a big girl, and now that she no longer clings to her bottle like a dryer sheet to a fuzzy sock, she’s headed off to school. Scientology school to be exact. A British newspaper alleges Cruise is keen for his youngest child to learn the ways of his religion. But lest you … Continue reading

Scary Places: Bobby Mackey’s Music World

I know what you are thinking – “What in the world?” How can a place called Bobby Mackey’s Music World be haunted? Well, I was thinking the same thing, but then the name kept appearing in research. The other night, I was scanning the channels and ran across a listing for it on one of the many ghost series that are being shown on television this week. Well, that was enough to convince me to further investigate this nightclub that is known as “Hell’s Gate.” The nightclub, which is located in Wilder, Kentucky, reportedly stands on land that used to … Continue reading

No Wedding in Sight?

The season of weddings is well upon us. As a previous article on wedding stats revealed, summer months rank very high in wedding ceremonies. When friends, relatives, and others begin planning and talking of weddings, those who are not married may begin to also dream of their own plans. In life we seem to live in stages or steps. As we grow older there are natural life occurrences that we feel should be taking place. For example some are moving out of our parents’ home, choosing a career, getting a job, and yes marriage and children. Relationships also move in … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: Free Gas, It’s a Gas, and a Ghastly Sight

FREE GAS It doesn’t get much cheaper than free, right? Then again, is anything in life truly free? You can ponder that while you are trying to win 9,000 gallons of gas from a West Virginia casino. Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack is offering guests who are considering canceling their summer road trip due to record high gas prices the chance to walk away with fuel that is estimated to be worth more than $30,000. It’s no joke. The casino is giving away a tanker of fuel to one lucky person on April 18th. Players can earn entries for the grand prize … Continue reading

Should I Blog for Myself or for a Company?

“Should I blog for myself or for a company?” is the very first question you need to ask yourself when trying to decide how to break into the blogging field. Yet it really isn’t an either/or question – I ought to have phrased it, “Should I blog for myself or for a company or both?” because quite often, people end up doing both. I personally blog for Families (obviously) and then I also have two personal blogs – one supporting a political candidate, and then the other is just a blog where I can spout off random thoughts and happenings … Continue reading

Make Mine Music (1946)

“Make Mine Music” is a classic Disney film that was probably a lot more popular with kids of a past era than it is with kids today. It’s a series of songs accompanied by illustrations, but it has no overriding plot to tie it all up. It’s like watching a whole bunch of shorts strung together, and while all of them are well done, I’m not sure all of them are very interesting to today’s more particular audience. We start the movie with the song “Blue Bayou,” where we see everything painted in blue. We drift through some dangling Spanish … Continue reading

Christian Rock Music

There are those out there who believe Christian Rock music is too worldly and some that even believe that the beat is Satan driven. I’d like to share with you why I feel differently. When I was younger, I was really into rageful and sometimes depressing rock music. There are 2 main things that drew me into it; the beat and the lyrics. I was drawn into the music because I could relate with many of the lyrics. The beat of the music brought out the emphasis and passion in how I felt. In hind sight, I can see it … Continue reading
