Surprise Sound

Think about the reaction you’d get from family members and friends if they paged through your scrapbook and got an earful of your husband’s snoring. Nothing says “interactive scrapping” more than a mini recorder playing back your favorite sounds. Memory albums have come a long way since the days of magnetic pages and simple layouts. These days you can add tiny recording devices to page designs which allow you to document and play back everything from your son’s first piano lesson to the first song you danced to at your wedding reception. Other uses for scrapbook recording devices include capturing … Continue reading

How Surprises Can Affect Your Home Business

Sometimes, life throws surprises your way. Whether the surprises are happy ones or not, they are likely to affect your home – based business in one way or another. Since surprises happen unexpectedly, it is difficult to prepare for them. The key to recovering from a major surprise is to react to is as best you can. Last Friday, I received a very big surprise. I had to go to the hospital for an ultrasound and some lab tests. At the time I thought that I was about thirty six weeks pregnant. That meant that I still had approximately another … Continue reading

What Is an Ultrasound?

I’ve got ultrasounds on the brain at the moment, since I’m having one on Monday afternoon to confirm my doctor’s diagnosis of fibroids. Also known as sonography, ultrasound imaging uses sound waves to create pictures of the inside of the body. One big advantage of an ultrasound over other kinds of imaging is that an ultrasound does not use ionizing radiation (like an x-ray does) and is generally non-invasive. Ultrasound images are captured in real time, so they can even show the movement of blood through vessels! Conventional ultrasound displays the images in thin, flat sections. There are also 3D … Continue reading

Surprise Babies: Heather’s Story

This month I’m talking about surprise babies. I’ve been looking forward to sharing with you the story of one special little girl named Lillian Rose, who surprised her parents and their family with her miraculous debut. Her story begins long before she was born in 2002, when Heather and Jeremy met while working together at a local tool store. The high school sweethearts started dating two years later. On August 6, 2006, they tied the knot. About three months after they got married, they decided to start a family, but it wasn’t long before Heather realized things weren’t going to … Continue reading

5 Reasons to Let Your Baby’s Gender Be a Surprise

Yesterday I talked about five reasons you should find out your baby’s gender ahead of time. Personally, I am glad I found out we were having a boy when I was pregnant with my son. Not only did I enjoy calling him by his name throughout most of the pregnancy, but it allowed my family to bond with him in a special way as well. Interestingly enough, I think when we have a second child I would like to be surprised. I want to experience it both ways! You can enjoy the surprise. There’s nothing like hearing “It’s a ___” … Continue reading

Turn Your First Ultrasound into a Pregnancy Announcement

Telling your friends and family you are expecting is an exciting time. Especially for first time parents, finding a creative way to break the news and surprise loved ones is half the fun! I used a couple different ways to tell my family. With my husband, I didn’t get creative because I was just too excited to wait. I ran straight from the bathroom, stick in hand, to the bedroom where my husband was fast asleep. It was four in the morning, so I’m not sure he really understood what was going on. Likewise, I told my mom by emailing … Continue reading

Car Thief Finds Surprise in Trunk

You may have noticed that I like odd animal news stories — especially the ones that involve animals turning up in strange places. You might remember the German shepherd dog on the roof with his toddler, or the cougar visiting a woman in her hot tub? Well here’s a new one: the exotic cat in the trunk of the stolen car. A St. Petersburg television station owner had his pricey Mercedes stolen in April. But Mikhail Barakin is less worried about the car and more worried about what was in it: a rare Asian leopard cat that was given to … Continue reading

Baby Blog Month in Review: July 2008

Two of my three children are summer babies. That is, they were born in the summer and had their first months surrounded by sunshine streaming in the windows, the sound of birds chirping, and days spent wearing nothing but a diaper and a “onsie.” I made sure that they had Fourth of July outfits ready, even though one of them arrived a week after the holiday. I guess he just wasn’t interested in the parade. Do you have a summer baby, too? We had a lot of new information to share this past month, such as recall notices and new … Continue reading

How is the Gender Determined by Ultrasound?

Ultrasound is quite effective for determining the gender of the baby. With an experienced ultrasound technician and good equipment, the gender is correct about 95% of the time. The only time there may be a problem is if the baby is shy. By now most of us know that the gender can be detected with ultrasound. What many don’t know is how is this done? What does the technician see that reveals the gender of the baby? Is it something I can see? Sometimes parents that don’t want to know the gender worry that they may accidentally see something during … Continue reading
