End of Summer Layouts

Now that summer is coming to an end, it’s time to go through all of the masterpieces your mini Picasso made for you in the last three months. Whether she crafted them at sleepaway camp or during an afternoon workshop, you’ll want to preserve the special works of art. Scrapbooks are ideal vehicles to show off your child’s precious artwork and the end of summer is one of the best times to craft a memory album. The weeks before kids head back to school is perfect for sorting through what’s worth keeping and displaying and what is really better off … Continue reading

Summer Journaling

Strawberry picking, swimming, biking, scavenger hunting, and theme park hopping; these are just some of the activities my family has participated in so far this summer. Fortunately, I had the foresight to bring my camera along to the aforementioned events, so I could scrapbook them in a mini album. Unfortunately, I neglected to jot down notes during our summer adventures, so now I am left racking my brain trying to recall details to include in journaling blocks. A little writing can go a long way when it comes to scrapbook journaling. Don’t stress out about taking copious notes while you … Continue reading

Unique Memory Albums

I’m hooked on chipboard scrapbooks. Not chipboard embellishments; I am head over heels in awe of chipboard memory albums whose pages spell out words, such as “Mother,” “Love,” “Family,” “Vacation,” or “Sister.” I rarely stray from crafting anything but traditional albums. Typically, my focus is on squeezing as many photos on a single layout as possible, so using a standard 12×12 page works best for me. However, after seeing how many mini images I could fit on a page from a chipboard scrapbook, I am obsessed. Granted, when creating page designs in a chipboard scrapbook, you have to be a … Continue reading

Make Mine a Mini

When you are looking for a quick and easy scrapbook gift to give a loved one, why not make it a mini. Don’t let their small size fool you; mini memory albums can be just as pretty or provocative as their full-sized counterparts, though they don’t take near as much time or money to create. My first foray into mini scrapbooking came when I inherited a detailed kit from a fellow scrapper who was cleaning out her craft closet. You can purchase the pre-packaged kits from scrapbook supply shops or craft stores, such as Hobby Lobby or Michaels. My kit … Continue reading

Summer Fun for Preschoolers

Preschoolers love to exercise their independence, so many of the activities that might keep them amused during the summer months should be designed so they can work with minimal parental interruption. Give yourself a break by allowing your preschooler to work on projects independently. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t supervise your child, it just means that you should allow him to work at his own pace and solve problems on his own. Here are a few ideas to keep summer fun for your preschooler: GARDENING Introduce your child to gardening by visiting a local botanical garden or farm (u-pick strawberry … Continue reading

Make Your Own Albums with Bind-It-All

If you are someone who loves to mank small albums for gifts or just for yourself, I think I may have discovered just the product for you while I was at CHA last month. The Bind It All system allows you to create your own chipboard covers and inside album pages. Here is a quick run down of how this system works and what machines are needed. This is a system that allows to cut, punch, bind holes, and attach wire binding to albums. You can create an album to be any size you need as long as you have … Continue reading

Things We Love Album

We all have things we love. They may be as simple as the feeling of clean sheets as we climb into bed or as important as family. Why not create something that celebrates the things you love? These things are the little bits of information that your family and others will want to know about you in years to come. I recently completed this little (4 X 4) accordion album about the things each member of our family loves. This was a very simple project that only took a couple of hours to put together. Each page of the album … Continue reading

Space Savers

Most crafters make use of traditional 12×12 albums to create memorable scrapbook layouts. However, there are times when 12×12 simply isn’t enough space to showcase all of your photos, mementos and embellishments. You can typically avoid having to redo your hard work by blocking your layouts prior to adhering items onto your page. While you are arranging your materials to create a cohesive design, consider the amount of space you are dealing with and how you can make use of every inch. For example, if you are suffering from picture overload, consider using photo corners instead of frames or mats. … Continue reading

Scrapbook Squeeze

I have a bad habit of trying to squeeze way more photos on a scrapbook page than I probably should. Most standard layouts typically feature a handful of photos that enhance the theme of the page design. Whereas I start off selecting two or three favorite images, I end up attaching close to a dozen, and the result can be a bit chaotic looking. My mom is constantly nagging me to ease up on the number of photos I use and instead place the extras in a mini album. It’s not a bad idea, as mini albums can accommodate a … Continue reading

Quoting Kids

If you read my posts in PARENTING, then you know I love quoting my 7-year-old. Me: “Just a second, honey. I have to finish this project.” DD: “Your work is so annoying. Just tell them you’re dead.” Out of the mouth of babes, right? What’s even funnier (to me anyway) is that I could easily design an entire scrapbook layout around that single quote. Kids are a fountain of inspiration when it comes to providing quotes that can add pizzazz to a page design. In some cases your child may say something unique or hilarious that will spice up a … Continue reading
