Adventures in Summer Scrapping

Lions, and tigers, and bears! Oh my! Nothing says summer scrapbooking quite like a spread that showcases a family trip to the zoo. It’s memory book-making at its finest… and easiest. Think about it; unlike some summer adventures, the zoo is loaded with photo opportunities, from snaps of your kids getting up close and personal with penguins to images of Junior taking his first camel ride. An afternoon at the zoo can yield an entire scrapbook of funny and exotic layouts, especially when you pair your favorite pictures with mementos, including maps, ticket stubs, brochures and receipts. Fortunately, there is … Continue reading

Scrapbooking Your Summer Adventures

What’s been the highlight of your summer so far? For my daughter, it’s been boogie boarding; for my friend’s son, it’s been attending band camp; and for my neighbor, the highlight has been her annual trip to Mexico. All three events are scrapbook worthy, as is just about any adventure you may experience this summer. The trick to crafting an eye-popping series of layouts that showcase your summer memories to the fullest is to plan ahead. For starters, you’ll want to snap a ton of photos of your seasonal escapades. Next, you’ll want to collect as many mementos as possible … Continue reading

Make Scrapbooking More Manageable

I love scrapbooking; however, the hobby can suck-up a ton of time. Even if you have a few years of scrapbooking under your belt, you can easily spend multiple hours crafting a single layout. That time can double or even triple, if you are adding tiny embellishments, intricate memorabilia, or a large journaling block. The key to keeping on task is to avoid getting overwhelmed by your project. Often, I procrastinate when crafting page designs because of the time commitment. Fortunately, there are ways you can create an eye-catching layout without having to pull several all-nighters. For example, if journaling … Continue reading

Thrifty Scrapbooking

Scrapbooking is often regarded as an expensive hobby. With so many different products and tools on the market, you could easily drop thousands of dollars to fund a scrapbooking addiction. But, what if you don’t have a lot of money to spend on crafts? Just because you are working on a tight budget, doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on all of the excitement that comes with making elaborate memory albums. In addition to finding scrapbook materials on sale, there are a number of every day items that can be repurposed and added to memory books, including beads, … Continue reading

Scraps to Scrap

One of the cleverest uses of scraps I’ve seen featured in a scrapbook layout was a collection of candles made from leftover pieces of ribbon placed on top of a die cut birthday cake and topped with rhinestones to mimic flames. Now, that’s creativity at its finest. I wish I could say I came up with the idea, but alas, I am not that ingenious. However, I have recreated the scrap ribbon candle in a number of my own birthday layouts. More importantly, the idea inspired me to find other ways to turn scrap material into embellishments for my page … Continue reading

Benefits of Saving Your Scraps

One of the easiest ways to cut down on your scrapbooking bill is to save leftover supplies. Typically, I purchase embellishments for specific layouts, so it’s rare for me to have a ton of scraps. However, the leftovers I have are meticulously sorted and placed in an accordion file. You could sort them by color or manufacturer, but I find dividing scraps by theme is the method that works best for me. If you your scrap stash is dwindling or you just want to beef up your reserves, consider looking for extras in every day places. For example, wrapping paper, … Continue reading

No-Stress Scrapbooking

My local Wal-Mart has drastically reduced prices on select pre-made scrapbooks. Most of them feature autumnal colors, though there are a few which include pastel shades. The low prices make them hard for me to resist; however, judging by how many are left on the shelves I would venture to guess that other crafters don’t share the same sentiment. If you are an avid scrapper with years of experience under your belt, then you probably don’t purchase many pre-made scrapbooks. The memory albums are traditionally reserved for beginners and others who don’t have a ton of time to spend crafting … Continue reading

Enhancing Seasonal Scrapbook Layouts

So much for an extended January thaw. Our days basking in record warmth are about to come to an abrupt end. According to weather forecasters, 24 hours from now we’ll be back in the teens and buried under several inches of snow. Sigh! On the bright side, I can now resume designing my winter-themed scrapbook layouts with photos that include real snow, ice and sleet, instead of brown grass and bare trees. Nearly a decade ago my mom and I started a tradition of creating Year-in-Review scrapbooks. However, instead of waiting until the last week of December to design each … Continue reading

Extreme Scrapbooking

If you are wondering why your Sunday newspaper has gone missing for the last few weeks, blame TLC’s “Extreme Couponing.” The popular reality series is being blamed for a rash of newspaper thefts. Apparently, coupon divas looking to save a bundle by using Sunday inserts to purchase mass quantities of free toiletries and groceries are stooping to new lows in order to get high on bargain shopping. They are stealing other people’s newspaper coupons to supplement their stash. According to police in Florida, Wisconsin, California, Idaho, Texas, Alabama and Arkansas, newspaper thefts are on the rise. When the culprits are … Continue reading

Making the Most of Scrapbook Paper

Scrapbook paper is colorful, whimsical, sophisticated and… not cheap. As such, I try not to waste a single scrap. Frugal scrappers know the importance of using every last piece of expensive scrapbook paper regardless of its weight. Patterned paper is very thin and is sold in large multi-packs, while cardstock is thicker and more durable. The former can get down in price to about 10 cents per sheet if you buy it in large quantities, while specialty paper can easily exceed $1 or more per sheet. However, both varieties can be repurposed and used for other craft projects. This is … Continue reading
