Scrapbooking Another Decade

Do you have old photos from 20 years ago that need a home? Are you scrapbooking for other people that have photos from before you were even born? Are you making a scrapbook for your Grandmother’s 80th birthday? If so, then there is a great resource out there to help you get creative with those photos. There is a website called Infoplease.com that has a year by year section. This would be a great place to start to get ideas on what was going on in that time period before you were even born. I clicked on the year 1977 … Continue reading

Genealogy Resources on Pinterest

Pinterest is filled with all manner of interesting things! Some of them are related to genealogy. In fact, there are some genealogy websites that have their very own Pinterest page. Here is a quick list of where to look if you want to find some genealogy resources on Pinterest. When I first started using Pinterest, it appeared to be filled with photos of wedding dresses and intricately braided hairdos. You will find a lot of wedding ideas on Pinterest, but that is not the only thing it is for. The main idea of the website is to use it to … Continue reading

Reunion Layout Ideas

There’s more than one way to spice up family or class reunion scrapbook layouts. Rather than stick with traditional page designs which embrace standard techniques, consider branching out with whimsical approaches. For example, a fun way to document family history is to do so by displaying photos from different decades. Collect pictures of your family members from the 1940s, 50s, 60s and 70s to create a comical timeline that captures how they looked and acted through the years. While a picture may speak a thousand words, it may be even funnier to add personal anecdotes from loved ones featured in … Continue reading

Learning the Hard Way

I’ve been scrapbooking for more than a decade, and as I assess my memory book-making skills, I’ve come to the conclusion that many of the lessons I’ve learned over the years have come from making mistakes. For example, if you live in Hawaii or another warm climate, you need to be extra careful about where you store your scrapbook stickers. Exposure to direct sunlight, heat, humidity and salt air can ruin stickers, regardless of whether or not you keep them in their original packaging. Other lessons I’ve learned the hard way is that paper products should be stored away from … Continue reading

Surprise Sound

Think about the reaction you’d get from family members and friends if they paged through your scrapbook and got an earful of your husband’s snoring. Nothing says “interactive scrapping” more than a mini recorder playing back your favorite sounds. Memory albums have come a long way since the days of magnetic pages and simple layouts. These days you can add tiny recording devices to page designs which allow you to document and play back everything from your son’s first piano lesson to the first song you danced to at your wedding reception. Other uses for scrapbook recording devices include capturing … Continue reading

Spotlighting Family

Family reunion season is right around the corner. I’m reminded of this on a near daily basis, as my clan is responsible for helping host the upcoming summer shindig. Due to distance issues, I have been relegated to designing a scrapbook of the event. Basically, I will be the official photographer for the three-day extravaganza, and then my aunt and I will go through the images and figure out a way to craft organized layouts. In addition to documenting the actual party and subsequent activities, my mom wants the reunion scrapbook to also include family tree-type features. Her vision is … Continue reading

What To Do When You Make a Mistake

I’ve been there, done that hundreds of times. Whether it’s misspelling a word on a title, adding the wrong embellishment to a layout or using uneven ribbons to decorate a page border, scrapbooking is not without its fair share of errors. Obviously, some mistakes are easier to fix than others. When you misspell a word on a title it’s a bit harder to fix than if you made the same mistake on a small journaling block. Ditto for placing the wrong photo in a layout. If you catch your error early, you have an excellent chance of remedying the problem … Continue reading

Experimenting with New Products

I’m a stickers, stamps and die cut kind of scrapper. For years I rarely strayed from my standard combo. My method was safe, effective and looked good enough for me. Then, I was introduced to the magic of vellum and my layouts starting taking on a whole new dimension. So, yes, there are downsides of refusing to experiment with new or new-to-you scrapbook embellishments and accessories. For starters, you simply don’t know how much better your page designs can look if you are too afraid to incorporate different items into your repertoire. My reluctance to work with vellum stemmed from … Continue reading

Friends Forever

One of my favorite scrapbooks of all time was given to me by my best friend the day before I flew from my life-long home in Hawaii to my new dorm room in Wisconsin. I was 18 years old and excited to be entering a chapter in my life, but sad to be away from my companion of more than a decade. The memory album was filled with photos of us from elementary, middle and high school. Halloweens spent trick-or-treating for full-size Snickers Bars in matching clown costumes all the way to commencement day when we bid good-bye to fifth … Continue reading

Rock and Roll Scrapbook

Did you watch the Grammy Awards on Sunday? For me, the Grammys are the closest thing I get to attending an actual concert. I haven’t been to a live rock concert since I was in college, nearly two decades ago. In fact, I haven’t been to any type of live music event in years–unless you count my first grader’s school Christmas concert. If you are a die hard music fan, and you attend a lot of music events, then you might consider crafting a concert scrapbook. If you lack creativity and want to make scrapping as easy as possible, then … Continue reading
