Make Your Layouts Sing

With the advent of iPads, smartphones and digital notebooks, it’s no surprise that these days technology has advanced to the point where you can make your scrapbooks sing. I recently helped a friend craft a music-themed memory album for her tweenage son upon his return from band camp. We considered adding sound to the layouts, but decided against it at the last minute. Since my pal’s son didn’t bring back audio clips from the camp, we didn’t think sticking in a random recording would be appropriate. Of course, you could easily jazz up a music-themed layout by adding a Scrapbook … Continue reading

Summer Concert Scrapbooks

Country music may reign supreme deep in the heart of Texas, but here in Northern Wisconsin people are quite fond of boot scootin’ too. In fact, the Dairy State is home to one of the premier country music and camping festivals in the nation, Country USA. My country music-loving neighbor just returned from the multi-day concert which featured the likes of Sugarland, Keith Urban and The Band Perry. She ended up renting a VIP RV with a bunch of friends rather than camp in a tent. Judging by all of the photos she shared with me, she and her pals … Continue reading

Scrapbook Follow-Up

In a previous post I touched on the subject of interactive scrapbook layouts. The boom in technology has inspired many scrapbook fans to add unique elements to their page designs which make paging through a memory album a hands-on experience in more ways than one. One of the trendiest interactive elements available to scrappers today is the mini recorder. These tiny high-tech devices document everything from a child’s first word to a favorite song or a spouse’s snoring. I previously mentioned that PictureThatSound is a popular pick in scrapbook recording devices; however, it isn’t the only option available. Another reputable … Continue reading

Seasonal Scrapbook Checklist

T-minus five days until Santa sets out on his annual gift-giving all-nighter. By now your halls should be decked and ready for loved ones to share in the holiday merriment. If you are planning to document the upcoming seasonal celebrations in a scrapbook, now is the time to make your list and check it twice. Make sure your camera has extra batteries and an empty memory card, so you don’t have to worry about missing any of the magical moments. Also, have a pen and pad ready to document funny anecdotes that abound when you have multiple generations of family … Continue reading

Off-to-College Scrapbook

Tens of thousands of college coeds head back to school this weekend and my neighbor’s granddaughter is one of them. Kara is beginning her freshman year at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and in addition to hauling bedding, clothing and school supplies, she’ll be taking an extra- special item with her as she begins her foray to higher education. My neighbor just put the finishing touches on an Off-to-College-themed scrapbook filled with photos of Kara’s family members and friends. The memory album’s pages also include unique embellishments and special mementos that complement the photos taken at milestone events. To make the … Continue reading

Scrapbook Love Fest

Last night I asked my brother what he thought about the friendship scrapbook I made which features his wife and several of my other BFFs. His reply: “A friendship scrapbook? Is that what you’re calling this sappy love fest?” What? Too many rainbows and unicorns? Actually, I know exactly what prompted his sardonic comment, and it’s not all the awesome photos I embellished with hearts and XOXOXOs. My older sibling simply doesn’t appreciate a heartfelt friendship quote when he’s forced to read it. Or, maybe it was the sheer volume of emotional prose that got to him. Regardless of his … Continue reading

Soulful Scrapping

If you can’t stop singing the blues when it comes to uninspired scrapbook layouts, then consider paging through magnificent music memory albums. Right now my local scrapbook store is featuring some of the most incredible music memory books created by crafty customers. A gal, who took a spring trip to visit the Grand Ole Opry, Graceland and The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, put together the most incredible music scrapbook I have ever seen. Where to begin with its greatness… For starters, the woman who handcrafted the music masterpiece went to Lyrics.com and designed her own scrapbook paper featuring … Continue reading

Embellishing Your Dad’s Day Scrapbook

My daughter zeroed in on the package of grill-themed scrapbook stickers like a heat-seeking missile during our trip to the mall yesterday. Ordinarily, I would have passed on the non-sale item, but since all the men in our family love them some BBQ, I decided to splurge on the 3D adhesives, so we could add it to the Father’s Day scrapbook we’re just about done crafting. In addition to the slew of photos and various embellishments, including stickers, stamps and die cuts, we need to insert a few quotes and inspirational poems to round out the album. If you are … Continue reading

Scrapping the Joys of Motherhood

Your mom doesn’t have to be a craft queen to appreciate a Mother’s Day scrapbook gift. What’s more, you don’t have to be particularly crafty to make a Mother’s Day scrapbook gift. All it takes is a few fabulous photos, some embellishments and a whole lot of love to craft a memory book mom will cherish for years to come. If you are truly craft-impaired, then consider making a mini album rather than a traditional 12 x 12 scrapbook to honor mom. Mini albums are basically smaller versions of the larger models, but feature 6×6 or 8×8 pages. You still … Continue reading

Kid-Friendly Scrapbooks

Life would be so much easier if my young daughter was into Scooby-Doo, Mickey Mouse, or Sesame Street. Instead, she likes obscure kiddie characters that are not featured as scrapbook embellishments. Dang. I so wanted to create a layout featuring her favorite Nickelodeon characters, but I can’t find a single company that sells “Penguins of Madagascar” stickers, stamps or die cuts. Ditto for “Bubble Guppies” and “Max and Ruby.” However, if your kid is into Elmo, Cookie Monster or Big Bird, then the scrapbook supply world is your oyster. Good gracious, have you seen how much Sesame Street scrapbook merchandise … Continue reading
