Saving Money With Photographs

Several months ago I taught a basic photography class to a group of nine scrapbookers. We went over both digital photography as well as film photography and we talked about the importance of organizing your photographs for ease of scrapbooking. Surprisingly I learned that of the nine women present that night, only four regularly printed photographs. Two ladies admitted to having several rolls of film at home that have not been developed along with hundreds of digital photographs just sitting on their computer. The other three used digital and one lady admitted to having over a thousand photographs on her … Continue reading

The Three Biggest No No’s People Do With Their Photographs

There are so many things that people do with their photographs or have done with their photographs in the past, that sincerely make me cringe. Of course, it is not just me that is cringing. The people who are dedicated to archival quality of photographs are cringing too. These three no-no’s are so common, it is scary. Please avoid these three horrible ideas at all costs. Marking the Photograph Do not, I repeat, do not mark on the back of your photograph with anything other than a photo pencil that has been created and designed to keep your photographs safe. … Continue reading

Why Are My Photographs Deteriorating?

There is nothing worse than pulling a stack of photographs out of a container and seeing that the photographs are damaged or fading. Photographs are extremely fragile, and must be handled with extreme care if you want them preserved for future generations. There are plenty of reasons why your photographs could be deteriorating, however there are three main (and extremely common) factors that contribute to this. Poor Storage and Conditions Obviously as I have discussed in other articles, poor storage is the quickest way to damage your photographs. It is imperative that you take a little time to ensure that … Continue reading

Travel Savings—Rental Cars and Destinations

A few months back I wrote a blog about the high price of renting a car. From my computer to the desks of rental car company execs… not really. But, whatever it was that got the big wigs at Hertz to drop their prices I couldn’t be happier. The rental car company has slashed prices to introduce their new “Simply Wheelz” program. The booking requires a computer, as it is an online deal. You can take advantage of rates starting as low as $15 per weekend day (and $94 a week) by simply reserving your vehicle online (the first rentals … Continue reading

Ways to Save on a Dream Cruise

It’s a myth that the only way you can save on a cruise is to wait until the last-minute to book and take whatever itinerary you can get.  In fact, there are several ways you can afford to escape on a dream voyage without compromising your standards.  After all, cruise lines stand to gain more when they offer discounted cabins rather than set sail with a bunch of empty staterooms.  Even if a cruise line has to lower its rates to entice travelers, it’s still making a profit from passengers purchasing photographs, souvenirs, drinks, spa packages, and other services. The … Continue reading

Scrapbooking Made Too Easy?

My daughter’s first grade graduation party went off without a hitch. She celebrated the milestone with family, friends, and a huge five-tiered chocolate cake. In addition to the sugar and smiles, my soon-to-be second grader scored a gaggle of gifts, including a beginner’s scrapbook. Interestingly, my daughter didn’t quite know what to make of the book containing pre-made layouts. Since I am a relatively avid scrapper, I have always allowed her to make page designs from scratch using my stash of photos and embellishments. The album she was presented with includes decorations and mats for photographs, so there is little … Continue reading

Are Photo Albums Old-Fashioned?

One of my most valued possessions is my collection of photo albums. My mother did an excellent job of capturing our lives in photographs, and an even more excellent job of organizing them into albums. No, she didn’t scrapbook, as many often do these days. She put them all in a row in regular albums. I have one album for every two years of my life. I’ve continued the tradition with our daughter. As I look around at other families, I sometimes feel old-fashioned for continuing the tradition. It seems that most families today are doing one of two things: … Continue reading
