School Rules Scrapbook

I’m still working on my daughter’s first grade scrapbook. And by working I mean that I am on my second page. Never mind that the school year officially ends in less than six weeks. But, hey, who’s counting? I discussed some of my layout ideas in a previous blog, but what about the woulda, coulda, shouldas that I didn’t have the foresight to consider? Here they are: Handprint: Last year my daughter’s kindergarten teacher had all of the kids make a handprint art project on the first day of school. Then, on the last day of school, they made another … Continue reading

Tips for Scrapbooking Summer Camp Experiences

It seems only fitting with my two teen children off at summer camp for a week long sleepover adventure, that I would take on this topic. There will probably be more to say when they return home as well as layouts to share, and then the younger kids go next month so I am sure they will do things differently. Summer camp is often a great memory of your childhood so it should definitely be scrapbooked. Here are some ideas for doing so. Send a camera with them. It doesn’t have to be a fancy expensive camera, a disposable is … Continue reading

Scrapbooking Week in Review for April 1-6, 2008 with a Few Extras

I don’t know what it was like for you in your neck of the woods this past weekend, but our area was absolutely beautiful and was the closest resemblance to Spring that we’ve had since last year. We got some flowers planted, grass seed poured and enjoyed the outdoors as much as we could. Days like those are hard to find to scrapbook, because you want to enjoy the weather, but you can always do it at night or early in the morning. Remember to make time for it, while still enjoying the beautiful weather. Here is what has been … Continue reading

Breaking the Rules of Scrapbooking

In an earlier article I touched on there being no rules in scrapbooking. I suppose that isn’t exactly true, because there are certainly some thing you should or shouldn’t do. However, it depends on what your reasoning is behind the creation of that layout. You might make layouts because it is an awesome outlet for your creativity. You might like the ability to express yourself through art, and maybe photography and the freedom to do what you want on your layouts leaves you feeling exuberant. Theres is nothing like the feeling of a masterpiece complete when we have finished a … Continue reading

Scrapbooking Week in Review for September 10-16, 2007

I can never get enough layout ideas and inspiration for scrapbooking. I am constantly on the lookout for new ideas, techniques, products and examples to make scrapbooking fun and to get my juices flowing. Creativity comes naturally, but without these additional devices there are still times I would be in a rut. Here is what has been going on in the scrapbooking blog this week. Are Those Idea Books Any Good? Are the idea books out on the market any good? Will they inspire you? Will you find creative inspiration and create hundreds of layouts when you finally sit down … Continue reading

Scrapbooking Week in Review for August 13th-19th, 2007

The scrapbooking blog has always been one of the most popular blogs at families.com. That always makes me smile, since scrapbooking is probably one of my most favorite subjects in the world to talk about. I divide my time into sections so that I am equally sharing it with my family, my job (writing) and my scrapbooking. I often include my family in my scrapbooking endeavors for the simple reason that they love it too. Don’t forget to share those moments with your own families, and include your children in the layout making process. They aren’t professionals, but they will … Continue reading

Photography Does Lead to Scrapbooking

Not all photographers agree that photography and scrapbooking go hand in hand. While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I disagree. I think that creative, beautiful photographs should be displayed whenever possible, and that eventually you will run out of wall space and table space, so one should consider a scrapbook. But please read on, because it doesn’t mean what you think it means. A scrapbook is a collection of memories. Photographs collect these memories in a visual sense and when displayed can evoke many emotions in an individual. Photographers should definitely entertain the thought of creating a scrapbook. … Continue reading

Scrapbooking: Using Uncommon Embellishments

Lisa wrote that scrapbooking is a lifestyle. I completely agree with that. As a scrapaholic, every time I go shopping I see new ideas. Some of these are designs, but others are items not intended for scrapbooking. “How can I use that on a page?” often comes to mind, especially when there’s a sale going on. It was at one of those sales that I discovered body art. No, I would never wear it, partially because finding my belly button would be an exercise in itself, but more because we teach our girls that inner beauty is paramount. That didn’t … Continue reading

Scrapbooking: Three Rules of Threes

Yes, scrapbooking has rules! Did I lose a lot of you with that? Rules are, of course, made to broken (in scrapbooking, anyway!), but the rule of threes has served artistically-challenged-me well. Things look better in threes, whether they’re embellishments, photos, or colors. Your page design should lead the eye to three different spots, usually a triangle. Let’s say that you have a photo that you really like and want to include, but your subject is wearing a bright pink shirt. All the other photos that you want on the page have people in earth tones. Don’t despair! You can … Continue reading
