Preserving Your Family’s Memories

If you are fortunate enough to have old photo albums, diaries, or letters from your ancestors you know how much these treasured items can add to your understanding of your family history. They help you to understand what life was like for your ancestors. They also provide information about who your ancestors were on a personal level that is not reflected in the record books. Most importantly, looking at family photos and writings can help you to feel a connection to your ancestors. The ways that we save and store information today are much different than they were in the … Continue reading

Does Your Family Have Stories About Halloween?

Halloween is a time of year that brings back memories for some people. This is a great time of year to collect and record some really funny family stories. Ask your relatives what they dressed up as for Halloween when they were children. This is a good way to connect with living relatives, and to get a glimpse of what they were like as children. It is also a great way to get someone to tell you a story from their past. My family enjoys Halloween, and there are many family stories connected with Halloween that are fun to share. … Continue reading

Making Memories on Maui

In my opinion Maui has been getting a bum wrap lately. Instead of concentrating on the Hawaiian Island’s sugary white sand and pristine waters (not to mention the balmy air and the golden sunsets) several travel publications have been taking note of the record high gas prices ($4 a gallon for regular unleaded) and “outrageous” prices for accommodations. Who said paradise comes cheap? I was born and raised in Hawaii and feel compelled to provide a quick overview of the priceless opportunities that visitors get when they visit the state’s second largest island. For example: Haleakala. Not too many visitors … Continue reading

Halloween Candy vs. My Stomach

I love Halloween. I love taking an idea and turning it into a costume. I love the groups of little kids dressed up and shouting “trick or treat” at the door. And of course… I love the candy. When I was little — you may remember this, too — there were all sorts of candy scares around Halloween time. Urban legends (and real news stories) of people doing very hurtful things to candy, like inserting pins or razor blades. I remember carefully checking each and every wrapper for suspicious holes, and being forced to throw out home-made treats. It was … Continue reading

Teenage Halloween

My teenagers love Halloween. I think they love it as much now as they did when they were little trick-or-treaters. Of course, as a parent, I definitely stress and worry more about their Halloween activities now than I did when I could go along with them as a chaperone! I know what you’re thinking—teenagers, Halloween and trouble. It is what I think every year since my kids became old enough and reasonably responsible enough to go to parties and hang out with friends on Halloween. Every year, I give them the lecture and every year I give them a “deadline” … Continue reading

Creepy Halloween Beverages: Using Dry Ice

Using dry ice is the best way to get that creepy, spooky grave yard effect. It gives the impression that you’re serving some sort of concoction or brew rather than plain old homemade punch. You can pretty much make any type of beverage using dry ice so grab your favorite punch recipe, and some dry ice for a spooky brew. What It Is Dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide. Dry ice must be handled carefully because it is much colder than regular ice. In fact, you should always use gloves when handling dry ice. (Think about how when it’s really, … Continue reading

Musings On Oral and Written Family History

Today I was thinking about why genealogy appeals to so many people. There are many reasons, and every genealogist whether professional or amateur has a different reason why doing genealogical research is important to them. My personal reason for being interested in genealogy is two-fold. First, I am interested in knowing my heritage. I feel a need to connect with my ancestors and the way to do that is to learn all that I can about them. Secondly, as a parent, I would like to be able to teach my son about his ancestors, which of course involves knowing about … Continue reading
