You don't have to spend thousands of dollars tracing your family genealogy. Thanks to the handy dandy internet, and of course libraries, you can find out most of what you need for free.

Free genealogy sites abound. All you need is a lot of time and some information about your past and you can find out all you need to know about your family history. Here are a few fascinating and free genealogy websites where you can trace your ancestors:

Ellis Island

Ellis Island has gone digital. I remember a few years ago, visiting Ellis Island and looking for my great, great, grandmother. It literally took a few hours to find her name amongst thousands of others. Ellis Island has now gone digital. Go to their site, and you can either search by ship, or you can input the name of the passenger and as much information as you know. If they came through Ellis Island, you will be able to pull up records for them.

Access Genealogy

Another great and free genealogy resource for those who are searching their family histories. Access Genealogy is like a "go to" place for accessing records online. In addition, as you start researching your family, you can build a family tree and trace your ancestry back as far as your mind will take you.

Family Search

Another database of online records, Family Search also allows you to input your name or the name of a family member and in return it gives you listings of online public records for those people. A very helpful tool in searching for lost family members.

Roots Web

Roots Web is nice because it has all sorts of tools to use to look up online records, establish a family tree and find out other tidbits about your ancestry. While I didn't find that the database of records was as comprehensive as it is on other sites, I found that the other tools made up for it.

Where to Start Tracing Your Genealogy?

The experts say that if you're not sure where to start, start close to home and then work your way back. There isn't one "catch all" site where you can do everything, you're best going from resource to resource in order to find what you want. Tracing genealogy is fascinating and who knows what interesting tidbits you'll find in your journey!
