Sporty Scrapbooks

My local Hobby Lobby has reduced the price of gymnastics-themed scrapbook stickers by 30 percent. Could the sale be inspired by the American women’s gymnastics team bringing home team gold from London? Or, am I reading too much into it? After all, soccer, basketball, swimming and baseball-themed stickers remain at full-price. The 2012 Summer Olympics may be over, but as I mentioned in a previous post, you can keep the good times rolling by creating layouts or entire memory albums using your future Olympian as the subject. When crafting sports-themed scrapbooks you can incorporate several different elements into your page … Continue reading

Olympic Inspired Scrapbooks

It’s no surprise that various youth sports leagues see an increase in participants following the Olympic Games. After all, watching the likes of Michael Phelps, Gabby Douglas, Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings bring home the gold is enough to inspire any child to follow their athletic dreams. In fact, you may have a potential gold-winning athlete in your midst right now. If so, this is the time to document their hard work and accomplishments. Scrapbooks are the perfect vehicle to display your future Olympian’s magical moments. My 7-year-old has been enthralled watching the “Fierce Five” flip and twirl their … Continue reading

The Heart of the Scrapbook

Your album may be top-notch, your embellishments as fancy as they come, but at the heart of every scrapbook are treasured photos of moments you want to preserve for future generations. Given the importance of scrapbook pictures, it pays to fine-tune your camera skills. What’s more, if you are planning to craft a memory album with a particular theme, it’s also beneficial to create a list of specific shots you want to capture. Doing so will allow you to piece together comprehensive layouts that are as attractive as they are easy to read. For example, if you are planning to … Continue reading

Pets and Winter

When I woke up to snow yesterday my first thought was for my little dog. Poor Clementine. I have a Shih tzu, she weighs about eleven pounds and is a hairy beast. Well, not really because I keep her groomed to within an inch of her life. Shih tzu’s don’t have fur, they have hair, which grows and grows and grows. They don’t really shed because they don’t have fur but if you are not meticulous about brushing them they quickly become a matted mess. I am not good about brushing Clementine, it’s one of my many, many shortcomings as … Continue reading

Scrapbook Overhaul

Dear Oprah, would you kindly send your organizing guru Peter Walsh to overhaul my scrapbook space? Clearly, the queen of talk didn’t receive my S.O.S. prior to ending her show because my scrapbook corner is as horrendous as ever. I don’t have enough money to be a hoarder, but I could still use Walsh’s advice nonetheless. He’s got a show on Oprah Radio where he serves up general tips on how to de-clutter your home, but when it comes to specific scrapbook storage hints and tips, Walsh insinuates that there is no “right” way to organize your supplies. Rather, as … Continue reading

Free is Good in the World of Scrapbooking

In some cases free doesn’t always equate to good or even decent. This goes for everything from food to advice. You should always be cautious about accepting items for free when you don’t know all the details of the deal. I felt this apprehension the first time I was invited to take advantage of free downloads for scrapbook paper and embellishments. Fortunately, I had the benefit of knowing veteran scrappers who were well-versed in digital scrapping and had experience navigating online resources that offered quality products for free. When I first started exploring the sites I didn’t realize that the … Continue reading

Adding Color to Your Scrapbook

Can you scrapbook if you are color blind? The question was raised the other day while I was chatting with some of my scrapping friends. Interestingly, one noted that an incredibly successful wholesale design and manufacturing company that gets a ton of publicity on the Internet is run by a color blind guy. IMAGINISCE, which sells innovative papers and gazillions of coordinating products, lacks nothing despite the fact that its owner can’t detect the difference between mauve and burnt sienna. Ironically, scrapbooking centers on color and its coordination with photos and other embellishments. It’s challenging for even the most astute … Continue reading

Cowboy Scrapbook

A cowboy scrapbook–that’s what my 3-year-old nephew wants for Christmas. After seeing the truck-theme scrapbook his mom made for his cousin, the boy is adamant about getting a memory book filled with stickers, stamps, die-cuts and photos of horses. I offered to help my sister-in-law make one for him, but truth be told, I have never laid eyes on a horse-themed scrapbook. I assume they are popular with equestrians and farmers, but putting together one for a little boy who has never even sat on a real horse is a real challenge. I did some research on horse scrapbooks and … Continue reading

Fido’s First Scrapbook

My friend just adopted a new puppy. Charger is a Black Lab who has enough energy to power an entire city. Like most feisty pups his age, Charger is running the show at my pal’s home, though the family is loving every minute of the new addition’s introductory phase. The past two weeks have been filled with puppy playing, potty-training and picture-taking. Lots of picture-taking. In fact, my friend estimates that she likely has more photos of Charger as a young pup than she does of her oldest son as a baby. Fortunately, all those shots will be put to … Continue reading

Pet Scrapbook

My friend has created a scrapbook for every member of her family. And by every member I mean even the ones that don’t walk on two feet. Alex the dog, Kitty the cat and Winkie the gerbil each have scrapbooks chronicling their lives as treasured members of the Richter family. You’d be surprised by how many scrapbook supply companies actually sell gerbil stickers. Don’t wait until your beloved pooch has passed away to create a scrapbook in his memory. Now is the time to take photos, record milestones and tuck away mementos of special moments. Once you’ve collected your pet’s … Continue reading
