Charlie and the Christmas Kitty

If your children asked for, but didn’t receive the puppy or kitten they placed on their wish list to Santa, this book might work as a consolation present. Maybe. Sure, Charlie and the Christmas Kitty may be a far cry from an adorable tail-wagging, face-licking bundle of fluff that would follow your child around the house and potentially run for help should he fall down a well, but, hey, Santa’s not perfect. Still, you can’t deny the cuteness contained in this festive holiday read, even though the story’s clueless main character doesn’t realize it’s Christmas: “Why is there a … Continue reading

Insurance From the U.S. Postal Service

Christmas is just a few weeks away. Some of us have already begin our annual pilgrimage to the U.S. Post Office, to mail gifts and cards to loved ones who live across the country, (or across the world), from where we do. You can get a form of insurance to protect some of those parcels. The closer it gets to Christmas, the more likely it is that you will end up visiting the U.S. Post Office. Many of us mail a multitude of holiday cards to friends and family that are scattered out across America, (or around the globe). Lots … Continue reading

I Hope They Call Me On a Mission

I served a full-time mission from 1998-2000. It was a wonderful 18 months of my life. Some days it seems so long ago, and other days, I wish I was back there with nothing to worry about except whether or not I was doing what the Lord wanted, good enough to please Him. For anyone that does not understand why Mormons go on missions, it’s hard to explain. But, I can try and explain why I did. In fact, I’m speaking to the Young Women tonight at church regarding this very topic. In our church, mormon missionaries are not paid. … Continue reading

Winner, Winner, Chicken Dinner!

It’s been a year of firsts for my first-born: First year of full-day school, first bus ride, first spin on a roller coaster, first time riding a two-wheeler, and the first time reading a chapter book from start to finish without a single bit of help. Continuing my week-long series of super summer reads, today I am sharing a title that will forever hold a special place in my 6-year-old’s heart: The Trouble with Chickens: A J.J. Tully Mystery. I suppose it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that a book about a retired search-and-rescue dog named Jonathon Joseph Tully … Continue reading

Have You Seen the Modern Homemaker Line?

I am a homemaker myself. I made that choice when I decided to have kids. But, the term “homemaker” has always sounded old-fashioned to me. Anyone else feel this way? Well, whether or not it sounds old-fashioned, when we make the choice to stay home with our kids and be Moms, and give up careers, or other interests, we are in fact, making homes…right? Well, there is a line of scrapbooking papers and embellishments that I have to admit caught my eye. It is called Modern Homemaker by October Afternoon. This line is one that I want to add to … Continue reading

Countdown to Christmas… Toys

Thankfully, my young daughter hasn’t begun her annual countdown to Christmas. Or as it is referred to around our home: “Honey, be careful with that Sharpie when you cross off the days on the calendar!” Such was not the case last year, when she started begging Santa for Zhu Zhu Pets at the beginning of September. This year (thankfully) my child is not obsessed with one toy in particular; rather, she wants a few toys from each aisle of Toys R Us. We’ll see if Santa delivers. In the meantime, despite being more than two months out from the official … Continue reading

Never Say Never!

Easter 2009 was one for the record books (or at least the family scrapbook). Not because our family celebrated a birth, mourned a death or scored the winning lottery ticket during a late night gas run (darn Powerball). Rather, this Easter will live in infamy thanks to a series of events that taught me an important lesson in parenting: Never say never! “NEVER. EVER. EVER. AGAIN!” Those were the exact words I used in a blog I posted a few days ago addressing my distaste for public Easter egg hunts. After a nightmarish experience two years ago where my then … Continue reading

There’s a Lesson in Here Somewhere

Christmas isn’t over quite yet… at least in our home. Tuesday we celebrate the Epiphany, also known as Three Kings Day (formerly known as the “Feast of the Wise Men’’) or the 12th day of Christmas. Or, in the words of my preschooler: “A day for more presents.” For those of you unfamiliar with the holiday, January 6th basically foretells the visit by the Three Wise Men, who followed a star in the night to bring gifts to the infant Jesus. The Epiphany is a major holiday in Latin America, but in recent years it has been increasingly embraced by … Continue reading

Santa vs. Generous Grandparents

Who needs Santa when you’ve got grandparents? There have been many times when I have seriously considered hiding some of the dozens of Christmas presents my parents have sent my daughter and attaching gift tags that read, “From: Santa Claus” and sticking them under the tree on December 25th. My parent’s generosity is overwhelming… not that I’m complaining (my kid sure isn’t). It’s just that it’s getting harder and harder for me… I mean Santa… to compete with grandma and grandpa when it comes to holiday gift giving. For the record I should note that my 4-year-old is very blessed … Continue reading
