Looking Sharp

Thanks to a good behavior reward system designed by her second grade teacher, my daughter has accumulated a fairly impressive collection of decorative pins. Some feature ribbons and beads while others include fabric and gems. They are all beautifully constructed, and I’ve been wondering how I could help my daughter display them. Enter our neighbor. Yes, that one. The scrapbook queen of northern Wisconsin suggested we design a layout using the pretty pins. So, this weekend we found some patterned paper and used the decorative pins to embellish a double page layout. We used the bulk of the pins as … Continue reading

Looking Back at 2011

In just about 48 hours we will close the book on 2011. However, before you make like Wal-Mart and start working on Valentine’s Day preps, now is a good time to look back on the year that was. Creating year in review layouts is a tradition for me. I love selecting memorable moments from the last 365 days and putting them together in a classic page design. Since the passage of time is a vital part of any New Year’s celebration, consider using time-related embellishments in your layout. For example, I recently printed out an image of a large clock … Continue reading

Give Thanks for Free Embellishments

A few days ago I saw the most gorgeous Thanksgiving bouquet of vibrant sunflowers, royal lilies, button poms, gerbera daisies, alstroemeria, and mums. Only I didn’t get it to place at the center of my Turkey Day buffet; rather, I am using an image of the floral arrangement on a holiday scrapbook layout. The beautiful bouquet was part of a graphics package I found online for free. The clip art flowers didn’t cost me a dime, though they look like a million bucks on my page design. If you are looking for cheap ways to fill your Thanksgiving, Christmas or … Continue reading

Making Embellishments Pop

If you are a budget scrapper, then you are likely best friends with the sale buckets located at the back of scrapbook shops. The containers, housing reduced priced embellishments, are a gold mine for frugal crafters looking to stretch their scrapbooking dollar. I never miss a chance to dig through the sale buckets at my local scrapbook store. In fact, today I hit the jackpot because the bins were crammed with Fourth of July-themed embellishments which were on sale for 50 to 75 percent off. Granted, much of the materials were generic (stars, flags, flowers, etc.), but they can easily … Continue reading

Homemade Independence Day Scrapbook Embellishments

You might be surprised by how much money you can save on scrapbooking materials by simply looking around your home. With the Fourth of July rapidly approaching, many avid scrappers are prepping to snap super shots of their holiday festivities. The pictures will be used to create Independence Day-themed layouts filled with patriotic tributes and memorable moments with family and friends. Creating these holiday-inspired page designs can be costly, which is why I highly recommend making your own paper and embellishments. Take a moment to channel your inner Martha Stewart and turn every day items into works of art. For … Continue reading

Looking for Embellishments

Most scrapbookers feel that no scrapbooking layout is complete without a few embellishments. Whatever those embellishments happen to be is a personal choice, and one to be made as the page is either coming together or planned for. Sometimes scrapbookers are drawn to certain types of embellishments and they appear over and over again on their layouts. This is actually quite common. We have a style and we stick to it. So where do we find something new or different for our pages? You can browse the many aisles of the scrapbook store and with some exception, there is almost … Continue reading

Collecting Non-Traditional Scrapbooking Embellishments

Scrapbooker’s are constantly on the lookout for new and innovative items to use or try in their scrapbooks. This carries over even beyond the local craft store and scrapbooking store. This happens when they are browsing the local dollar store, or the local hardware store. But what about looking around your own home? We had a pile of clothing set aside to donate. It had been sitting there waiting for me to go through it, because I knew there were some pieces that just wouldn’t be good for someone else. Some had missing buttons, holes in the knee, tears on … Continue reading

Fish Fun

Don’t let Mother Nature put a damper on your summer fishing adventures.  If your big day has to be put on hold because of bad weather, have some fish-themed fun indoors. Children looking forward to reeling in the “big one” can practice their dexterity skills by making the following colorful underwater creatures: Fish Shapes:  Cut various shapes (e.g. rectangles, squares, circles, triangles, diamonds, hearts, etc.) from colored construction paper, and then let kids use the shapes to construct their own fish.  When they’ve put the final touches on their fish, have the kids glue the pieces in place and adhere … Continue reading
