Going RAW

A Christmas tree lot was just erected across the street from my church, and it’s not even Halloween! I guess I shouldn’t be surprised by the leap from back-to-school to Christmas. After all, just yesterday I received a catalog from my favorite camera store that’s filled with “MUST-HAVE DSLRS.” Apparently, Santa can order from the company and have the picture-taking tools sent directly to your home in time for you to snap holiday keepers of your kids. As I paged through my now saturated with drool catalog I noticed that a lot of attention was given to cameras that have … Continue reading

Dinosaurs Going Digital

When it comes to computers, my mom is a triceratops; super slow and completely uninspired. Last weekend I needed her help to get some documents published and my head nearly exploded from frustration. Her computer was working great; mine was gone, so I was forced to talk her through the process… on the phone… from 5,000 miles away. Five hours later I was furiously looking around for some Patron, and I don’t drink. Needless to say, I refuse to be my mom’s digital scrapbooking mentor. Not that it matters because she won’t take a single step into the world of … Continue reading

Can You Afford to Go Digital?

For some, embracing digital scrapbooking has led to an economic windfall. Several women from my scrapbook club are masters at finding free downloads for their projects. As a result, they have been able to save hundreds of dollars on scrapbooking supplies. In that regard, digital scrapbooking can yield huge savings. However, when trying to figure out if you can afford to switch from traditional scrapbooking to an online version, you also have to consider time and computer knowledge. For example, my mom willingly admits that she is about as tech-challenged as they come. It would take her weeks to fully … Continue reading

Cleaning Your Digital World

I finally get control of things in the real world and then I find that my digital “house” is a mess! Emails, websites, photos, documents, blogs, newsfeed and the list goes on and on. It’s wonderful to have all these digital resources at our fingertips but they aren’t really helpful if we can remember where we put them or we lose them when our computer decides to go belly up. The first time I lost a hard drive I was devastated. I lost a lot of my writing but more importantly I lost about three years of pictures. I knew … Continue reading

Are You Ready to Go Digital?

It’s going to take more than a few free kits to get my mom to experiment with digital scrapbooking. To say that my mother is set in her ways is a severe understatement. The woman wouldn’t even make a sample layout despite the hundreds of digital scrapbooking freebies that are available on the Internet. I, on the other hand, am all about free. This summer I have been taking a crash course in digital scrapbooking. My main objective is to see how many scrapbooking items I can accumulate without having to spend a penny in the process. As I mentioned … Continue reading

Going High-Tech

In my opinion, it is nearly impossible to take a bad photo with a digital camera. With all the high-tech gadgetry built into deluxe digital picture-taking devices, you really have to go out of your way to take a bad shot. And when you do, there’s a good chance that it can be fixed thanks to photo-editing software. I have yet to snap an image that can’t be improved with a little Photoshop detail. While you don’t need to be a tech whiz to work a digital camera, it helps if you are not afraid to experiment with various buttons … Continue reading

Going Retro

Retro photos are all the rage these days. At least according to my 17-year-old cousin, who recently set a date to take her senior pictures. The professional photographer she is working with convinced her to include some “nostalgic” photos in her portrait package. Does anyone else think it’s strange that a 17-year-old is posing for nostalgic type photos? What exactly is retro for a high school senior? Baggy pants and denim overalls? My understanding is that nostalgic photography tries to evoke feelings associated with a long forgotten era. The 1990s seem not so far removed from the 21st century, but … Continue reading

Going Digital

A friend of mine is trying to get me to go digital. She doesn’t see how I could possibly want to stick with traditional scrapbooking when I could be embracing the wave of the future—-digital scrapbook kits. The other day she walked me through her Adobe Photoshop program to show me how she creates her stunning layouts. To be honest, I am not a tech-nut. I like simple and clean. Photoshop seems like it is better suited for sophisticated and elaborate spreads given the almost endless amount of effects you can create on a single page design. Even the most … Continue reading

Scrap a Header for Your Blog

There are so many people out there with scrapbooking blogs. Hundreds. I would venture to say there are thousands. The web is amazing. Many of these blogs are for sharing layouts, creating challenges, starting up a scrapbooking business, or a mix of scrapbooking and personal blogging. Whatever your scrapbook blog might be, you can add some personality to it by scrapping your own header for your blog. I have used free templates for my blog that you can find all over the web, but I was never quite happy with how they looked. But, I didn’t want to have to … Continue reading

Digital for Dummies

Learning digital scrapbooking can take time, especially if you are not comfortable working on a computer. I know a ton of older, avid scrappers who absolutely refuse to acknowledge that digital scrapping is an option. However, with the help of free workshops offered by our local scrapbook shop, some of them are coming around. It takes a while for some die hard scrappers to go digital, but once they see how much time and money they can save by scrapping with the help of a computer, most become converts. If you are considering giving digital scrapping a try, consider the … Continue reading
