More Ways to Get Wired

In a previous blog I provided tips on how to incorporate craft wire into scrapbook layouts. Fortunately, you don’t have to channel Martha Stewart in order to twist and turn colorful wires into works of art. Rather, all you need is a little patience, some creativity and these tips: Words: One of the easiest ways to add a bit of wire to your page design is to bend it in the shape of words. Consider making an entire page title (or part of one) by shaping the wire into a word. If you need some help with the shape, print … Continue reading

Get Wired

My teenage cousin works at a bead shop. She’s always loved making her own jewelry, so her job couldn’t be a better fit. In addition to getting a huge discount on merchandise, she often scores overstock items for free. Last week her boss let her take home a ton of wire. My cousin is now the proud owner of five spools of craft wire ranging from 22 to 26-gauge. She is planning to make a bunch of bracelets with her wire jackpot. In addition, she offered me a couple of spools for scrapbooking. Craft and scrapbooking shops sell special wire … Continue reading

How Much Sleep Should Your Preschooler Get?

Recently, I read an article on sleep. In this article, researchers studied the brains of adults who had not slept well for a week. The adults thought that they were doing fine, and they thought that their judgment was not impaired. However, when they took a test, they discovered that they were actually impaired to the point that their brains functioned as if they’d had a few too many drinks. They were not fit to drive or to function, but these adults thought that they were doing all right. The same went for children. The researchers instructed intermediate-aged children to … Continue reading

Ask a Baby Blogger: Lactose Intolerance, Reflux and Breastfeeding

Question: I was wondering about this. my neighbor said she couldn’t BF because he was lactose intolerant, which lead to horrible reflux. would that much be possible? This comment was left on my other post about breastfeeding and whether or not a baby can truly be allergic to breast milk. I am sad to say that more often than not, I hear of bad advice and misunderstanding surrounding breastfeeding problems than sound, well researched advice. It is possible that a baby can be lactose intolerant and therefore unable to breastfeed but highly improbable. True (Primary) Lactose Intolerance What is referred … Continue reading

When Anxiety and Nervousness Are Hard-Wired

Recently, one of my children was embarking on a scary, new endeavor. It was something pretty big and I asked, “Are you nervous?” My child answered with amazing honesty and candor, “Mother, I’ve been nervous since the second grade.” And, it is true. This is a child who is naturally prone to anxiety and nervousness—but over the years, has learned how to manage and have some self-awareness about how to deal with this natural personality tendency. I have met other parents of “anxious” kids and many of us started out trying to just MAKE our children get less anxious. But … Continue reading

UK Approves Three-Person IVF Techniques

Couples who are having difficulty conceiving have the option of turning to in vitro fertilization (IVF). The process allows that couple to pass their own genetic material onto an offspring that is biologically theirs. The UK recently approved a new kind of IVF that has been referred to as “three-parent babies”. The two techniques are somewhat different but each can be used to help couples produce a healthy child. In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a complex procedure that combines an egg and sperm outside of the body. The conception happens in a laboratory. Once an embryo (or embryos as is … Continue reading

Putting Your Preschooler to Work

Nothing makes preschoolers happier than helping their parents.  Studies show that young children are wired to get pleasure from pleasing their mom or dad.  So, instead of ignoring your four-year-old when he offers to help you make the beds, fold laundry or put away groceries, allow him to exercise his independence by lending a hand. In some cases, a preschooler’s attempt at helping is more of a hindrance to parents; however, with a little patience you can turn these heartfelt efforts into teachable moments. When my now 8-year-old daughter was a preschooler nothing delighted her more than being able to … Continue reading

Missouri’s HealthNet Covers Pregnant Women and Newborns

Every state has a Medicaid program. Typically, the Medicaid program of an individual state will be segmented into separate parts that are each designed to cover a particular population. At least one of them will cover women who are pregnant. In Missouri, that part is called MO HealthNet for Pregnant Women and Newborns. Medicaid is a government run, or public, form of health insurance coverage. It is designed to help people who are low-income have access to health insurance coverage, and therefore, health care. Medicaid is funded by both the federal government and the government of an individual state. In … Continue reading
