Winter Scrapbooking Sub-Themes

After I put the finishing touches on my holiday-themed memory books, I usually take a break from scrapbooking for a few weeks. January is typically a quiet month in our family. We celebrate very few birthdays and even fewer anniversaries during the first month of the year. However, since I am obligated to create a monthly layout for my Year in Review scrapbook, I still have to come up with at least one event to scrap. In years past I have crafted pages with photos of my daughter’s outdoor winter adventures, including skiing, sledding, ice skating, and snowman-building. So far … Continue reading

Untraditional Scrapbooks

You may feel as though you’ve seen just about every themed scrapbook imaginable, but when it comes to album sizes, you haven’t seen unique until you’ve laid your eyes on a scrapbook made from a standard Rolodex. Yes, a Rolodex. Who knew the plastic filing device, which holds index cards and spins for convenience, could be transformed into a place to keep your treasured memories? I got my first taste of the Rolodex scrapbook during a workshop I attended just after Labor Day. The seminar was designed to get avid crafters to experiment with untraditional means of scrapbooking. Rather than … Continue reading

In the Kitchen Scrapbook

Back-to-school supplies are front and center at just about every retailer right now. However, instead of sending your recent high school grad off to college with a new comforter set and a bunch of No.2 pencils, why not gift him with something that’ll really come in handy when his wallet is as empty as his stomach—-a recipe scrapbook. More than just a place to preserve files of instructions on how to make your favorite dishes, cookbook scrapbooks are designed to document family history for generations to come. By scrapping cherished collections of tasty recipes compiled by loved ones, you’ll be … Continue reading

Creating a Fuzzy Effect

My daughter is counting down the days until the release of HOP, the animated movie about the Easter Bunny who doesn’t want to carry on the family tradition of handing out goodies on the day of Jesus’ resurrection. The film is destined to be a major blockbuster. I don’t see how it couldn’t given the mass publicity it has been getting; couple that with the insane amount of merchandising (have you been to Wal-Mart’s Easter section?) and you have the recipe for box office success. Heck, even my local scrapbook store is getting in on the action. The seasonal display … Continue reading

Christmas Cookie Scrapbook

Now I’ve seen everything. Yesterday I popped into my local scrapbook supply store to pick up an extra pack of holiday-themed stickers for a layout I am creating to display my daughter’s school Christmas concert photos, but what to my wondering eyes should appear: a Christmas cookie scrapbook. I’m not sure I would have believed it unless I saw it with my own two eyes. Sitting in the middle of the display table was a pimped out Christmas recipe scrapbook filled exclusively with amazing photos of the most divine cookies known to man and directions on how to make them … Continue reading

Family Recipes Make Connections With Living Relatives

As you collect family stories, you may come across some special family recipes. I am fortunate, because my family has more than one recipe that has been passed down. Every time someone serves this food at a family gathering, we remember the woman who created the recipe. This is a great way to connect with living family members, as we all share stories about that person. One of my grandmothers, my father’s mother, made a fantastic potato salad. This was a favorite dish at every family gathering. No matter what else was served, we could be certain that the bowl … Continue reading

Using Embellishments on Your Scrapbook Page

If you are new to scrapbooking you might be wondering about embellishments. What are they and why should I use them? Embellishments add flair to your scrapbook pages. They spruce up the layout on your page and make it more eye-appealing. The most common type of embellishment to use is stickers. Go to any craft store and you will be amazed by the selection of stickers out there. Different sizes, colors, themes, characters and designs. Stickers can be sold individually, on rolls or single sheets of paper. Many scrapbook kits will also include stickers. Another commonly used embellishment is die-cuts. … Continue reading

Creating Themed Scrapbooks

Themed scrapbooks are a fun idea. It helps to take away the scrapbookers block that so many of us get. The idea behind a themed scrapbook is that you start off by picking any theme. Think of your favorite trip you took as a family. You could create a Disney scrapbook. Think of your favorite sport to play. You could create a football scrapbook. Think of your favorite hobby. You could create a recipe scrapbook. Whoever the scrapbook is for, pick a theme that suits that person. If this is a family scrapbook, what theme encompasses what your family is … Continue reading

Making Scrapbooking a Family Affair

Are you looking for ways to spend time as a family that does not involve the TV? It seems that TV viewing has become a family activity in many homes across America. While, watching TV in moderate proportions is not bad, it does not make a good “together” activity. Chances are during a TV show or a movie night, you are not sharing old memories, laughing together, or being creative. Why not spice things up a bit and allow all members to use their talents to come up with a very special family time together. Although not everyone shares the … Continue reading

Creating a Recipe Scrapbook

Scrapbooking is not just a way to preserve photographs and memories. You can create a variety of scrapbooks that preserve other things such as your family recipes. What better way to hand down some of your family’s favorite dishes than by creating a recipe scrapbook. My 13-year-old daughter recently got her hands on a sugar cookie recipe from her grandmother. She just loves to bake and has become so good at it that she scoffs at me when I bring home the ready-to-break cookie dough or the kind that you just slice. I’m not entirely sure where she got her … Continue reading
