Chipper Chipboard

Nothing makes me happier than finding a way to make something out of nothing. As I mentioned in a previous post, my neighbor recently gifted me with a stack of plain chipboard which I have been dutifully transforming into elaborate scrapbook embellishments. Well, some of the page decorations are not that fancy, but they certainly add color and texture to my layouts and that is my ultimate goal. Moreover, enhancing the plain chipboard has saved me a ton of money. Premade chipboard stickers and other accents are not cheap. In addition, when you purchase chipboard products that are already decorated, … Continue reading

Chip, Chip Hooray

Fifty pieces of plain chipboard to cut, 50 pieces of chipboard, slice one up; paste it in place, 49 pieces of chipboard to cut. Not exactly bottles of beer, but you get the picture. I was recently gifted with several dozen pieces of plain chipboard, and now I am desperately looking for ways to slice and dice them into works of art which I can use to make my scrapbook layouts pop. If you are an avid scrapbooker, then you know how expensive premade chipboard accents cost. The high price is just one of the reasons I refuse to waste … Continue reading

Chip Off the Block

Whereas I am a huge advocate of repurposing leftover material to decorate my scrapbook layouts, I don’t go out of my way to embellish exclusively with environmentally-friendly products. To get me to “go green” my neighbor recently gifted me with a large stack of plain chipboard. The specialty scrapbook embellishment (very thick pressed cardboard paper) is made from recycled products. Chipboard is used to add color and dimension to layouts in a variety of ways, including letters for titles, photo corners, frames, decorative shapes, page borders and tags. Scrapbook supply shops sell a variety of chipboard accents. These vibrant embellishments … Continue reading

Chip Off the Old Block

If you have ever had to clean candle wax off of couch cushions, then you are likely well skilled in the art of chipping. Or at least you should be. According to cleaning experts, you should never attempt to wipe hot wax off of fabrics, be it leather, silk or cotton. Rather, you should allow the wax to harden, and then carefully chip it off before treating any stain that remains. Depending on the size and shape of your cushion you might consider placing it in the freezer to speed up the hardening time. If the cushion is large or … Continue reading

Holiday Gifts from the Heart

The holiday season is an ideal time to teach kids about the importance of giving.  This year, though, consider doing one better by giving your children the opportunity to take a hands-on approach to gift-giving. There’s no need to break the bank purchasing expensive holiday presents for loved ones when you can use your creativity and other talents to craft a slew of special treats.  Show kids that by putting their heart into making a personal present for a loved one they will be giving a giving a gift you can’t put a price tag on. Some simple ideas include: … Continue reading

Bring On the Borders

Maybe it’s the time of year, or perhaps, it’s because I saw them used in a prize-winning layout. Regardless of the reason, I’ve been adding garlands, banners and borders on nearly all of my page designs this fall. The fun embellishments are an easy way to spice up an otherwise boring layout. What’s more, scrapbooking manufacturers are making it easier to add them to page designs by rolling out banners and borders in every theme imaginable. Festive holiday banners are readily available online and in stores, as are colorful borders featuring everything from baby to zoo themes. Making Memories has … Continue reading

Learning When to Zip It

I’ll be the first to admit that I’ve spilled a lot about my kid on this blog. A. Lot. Perhaps too much. Whereas it may not seem like it, I really do filter the information I share with the world about my child. For every one thing I reveal here, there are hundreds of personal tidbits I would never dream of publicizing, and as my daughter gets older, I plan to zip it even more. Even if she becomes an Olympic gold medalist. Ahem. Especially, if she becomes an Olympic gold medalist. You have to wonder if swimming superstar Ryan … Continue reading

We Can’t Change Our Children

Out of all the many lessons I am learning on this journey of parenthood, one that has especially been hitting close to home lately is the fact that I cannot change my children. Nor should I really desire to. Actually, this lesson began early on when my oldest son was about 4 years old. My husband is a sports fanatic. He not only enjoys watching sports but playing as well. So when our firstborn was a son, he assumed they would share the same interests. As soon as he was of age to join T-ball, we signed him up. My … Continue reading

And You Thought Hot Dogs Were Bad For Kids

Don’t you love it when other parents agree with you? I had to chuckle reading fellow blogger Matt Pinkston’s take on hot dogs. The dad of four kids is as repulsed by the popular kiddie menu option as I am. As he noted in a previous post: “After four years of undergraduate science, and understanding thoroughly what sodium nitrates and nitrates, corn syrup, food colorings, and parasites in hot dogs will do to people, I’m not a fan. The conflict intensifies when one child requests hamburger, which I then prepare, then insists on hot dogs, an item seldom in the … Continue reading
