Back to the Basics - Hidden Journaling

If it was so easy, we would all be doing it, right? What am I referring to? Journaling! I have noticed a huge trend in the scrapbooking industry with one picture layouts and nothing but a title and perhaps a quote but no words....no journaling.

I am a writer first and foremost, but then I am a die-hard scrapbooker. It disheartens me to see so many memories being forgotten because they aren't journaled. I have a few tips and pointers that might make these beautiful one page layouts remain gorgeous while being able to capture the memories and words that go alone with them.

The first thing I taught in a class recently, is that journaling does not have to go right on the page. This is where hidden journaling comes in. Besides being able to be hidden directly on the page, it doesn't stop there. Begin by writing out what you want to say. Don't worry about its length or size unless you are creating a very small album. Once you have completed your journaling which can be penned or printed, you can adhere that to the back of the layout. This way, the front of the layout remains unchanged, and in its same original beautiful context, yet the journaling has captured the memory and its on the back so someday people can pull it out and read it.

Of course the other way to do it would be to hide it on the layout behind a photograph or an element. You can do it several different ways. Create the piece that hides the journaling as a hinged element or create it so that it can slide out to the side or to the top. This is the most traditional way to hide your journaling, however with the thought that it can go on the back and you can still say what you want to say and not interrupt the balance and flow of your layout, it begs to be argued that perhaps that might just be the best way.

However that you decide to incorporate your journaling onto your layout, remember that journaling is important!
