School Days

Here’s an idea for a unique school-themed scrapbook layout: A photo collage of me and other moms with the bloody fingers we got from labeling every. single. school. supply. our kids are required to take to class. I typed up and stuck on more than 100 labels to individual crayons, pencils, markers, folders and notebooks. Insanity. And here’s the irony: I’m sure my kid will still get her stuff “accidently” stolen during the school year despite my four hours of hard labor. It’s not like a single white label is going to be a deterrent to kids with itchy fingers … Continue reading

Amish Themed Copywork

Those who incorporate a Charlotte Mason method use copywork daily. As I have stated in another article, copywork is can be used to teach a variety of lessons such as sentence formation and memorization. Many times, I am contacted by new homeschooling moms or moms who do not take a Charlotte Mason approach yet want to add in copywork for ideas. So, I thought it may be fun and useful to give some copywork ideas for those interested. Sometimes I assign copywork by theme. I have used hymns, poems, famous quotes, math rules, and grammar rules and so on, as … Continue reading

What Causes Offense?

In an episode of Boston Legal, Alan Shore and Denny Crane are on opposite sides in a case when a town wants to succeed from the United States. Denny says, ‘The idea of a place succeeding from the union deeply offends me.’ What’s more he can’t understand that his best friend doesn’t get that. ‘Which means you don’t know me,’ Denny says. His argument was if you don’t know what offends the person you’re close to, then how can you really claim to know them? It’s even more relevant in marriage than it is in friendship. So, let me ask … Continue reading

More about Television Shows for Your Child

In my last article I had begun discussing how many shows on television geared for children are trying to take on a more educated stance. While parents can have a little less anxiety about letting their children watch these shows, picking them out of the crowd of the television line up may not be as easy as it seems. The article had started giving parents some ideas on how to choose appropriate shows for their children to watch on television. In addition to the tips listed in the last article there are a few more. Be careful about shows in … Continue reading

Choosing the Right Television Shows for Your Child

Television has changed greatly over the years. There is a wide variety and selection of broadcast viewing. This opening up of the television air waves has opened our world to both more enrichment and more negativity. The good part about the new outlook on television is that parents can have more confidence and a larger selection in choosing a show that is somewhat educating for their child. Many television shows geared for children now focus on teaching academic and life skills. The bad part is that parents have to also be very careful about inappropriate shows that seem to pop … Continue reading

Should Television Be Used in the Classroom?

We all know that schools, daycares, babysitters, and preschools allow children to watch television at some point to some extent. The question is should they? I am guilty. My kindergarten students do not watch television in my class on a daily basis. However, I have used the television for several different reasons. I have shown videos pertaining to our lesson as an instructional method. I have also used television as a treat for students during our daily snack time. In addition to these reasons, yes I have used it as a babysitter. Please let me explain!! Kindergarten children do not … Continue reading

Friendship Theme Album – My Personal Album Day Five

Another important aspect of my new album was being able to put all the journaling that I wanted on the page. In the smaller album, I had to cut my journaling down and couldn’t say all that I wanted to say to each friend. I also wanted to be able to include friendship quotes throughout the album too. The project began by creating a journaling box for the details of each person’s friendship. It started out with where we met. This is the location of where we met – some of my friends I met through other people, some at … Continue reading

Friendship Theme Album – My Personal Album Day One

I began making this friendship album at the start of 2005 and never actually finished it. For some reason I got frustrated with it. I decided to try to figure out what went wrong. Here we are a year later and I have been freshly inspired to finish it. I thought I’d share my ideas and changes as I go, with all of you. Hopefully this will inspire you to create an album of your own. When I originally started this album, I decided I wanted it to commemorate the friends I had made in my life. These are the … Continue reading

Just Who is Candace E. Salima?

So, I’m thinking to myself. Maybe I should interview myself – hey, I’m writing these BLOGS, I’m an author and maybe you should know a little more about me. My bio paints a pretty clear picture of my background, on a surface level. But I’m going to ask myself the same questions I’m asking others. So here we go: 1. What prompted you to become a writer? My mother taught us how to read before we hit kindergarten. I can’t remember a time when books weren’t an integral part of my life. As a child my reading interests were in … Continue reading
