Deceased Dog Granted Legal Status Beyond Property

Legally pets are considered property. It’s relevant related to insurance claims or custody and other legal proceedings. It seems harsh to many, including myself, because in both instances it can lead to decisions that don’t seem to take into account that most people love their animals like family members. Now a Texas court has changed the game. The Second Court of Appeals in Fort Worth made a ruling in a case that gave dogs increased status above property. Dogster.com has the full story. One day the worst happened for an unnamed couple in the Fort Worth area. Their dog, Avery, … Continue reading

Carve a Disney Pumpkin

As I’ve always said I’m not a very crafty person. When it comes to fall activities I’d far rather focus on the eating: candy/caramel apples, apple pie, pumpkin pie, apple cider, and more. Give me the guts left over from a pumpkin carving session, I’ll roast up the seeds and put them in cranberry sauce, or apply the pumpkin innards to a pie or a chocolate chip pumpkin cake. For the more artistic types, however, or at least for those who enjoy crafts more than I do, this month/season gives the once-a-year opportunity for one unique craft: pumpkin carving. Those … Continue reading

Underappreciated Disney Films: Lilo & Stitch

Lilo: “We’re a broken family, aren’t we?” Nani: “No. Maybe a little. Maybe a lot. I shouldn’t have yelled at you.” Lilo: “We’re sisters, it’s our job. I like you better as a sister than as a mom. And you like me better as a sister than a rabbit, right?” Whenever I bring up 2002’s “Lilo & Stitch,” most people in the room immediately exclaim “I love that movie!” But despite that it doesn’t seem to get the same sort of attention as other beloved Disney films. Due to its relatively recent release, it’s not a movie most people grew … Continue reading

Magic Trick: Rings

My son has been using his hands more and more. While he’s not entirely capable of grabbing or picking things up on his own he’ll often throw his hand in a direction roughly towards object he wishes to interact with. There is a plush toy that one of his grandmothers bought him that hangs above one of his little swing thing and he’s been punching it lately to get it to rattle and move. Also hanging above his swing thing is an assortment of rings that his other grandmother bought him. Several of them are linked together and they hang … Continue reading

Super Summer Salads

It’s not exactly summer in my neck of the woods. Heck, it doesn’t even feel like spring. Today’s forecast calls for a mix of rain and snow with temperatures barely above freezing. (Don’t ask about the windchills.) I don’t know if Mother Nature can read but the calendar says it’s April 28th. Regardless of what it might look like out my window, I realize that in other parts of the world the mercury has already hit 100 degrees. And believe me I am not letting this batch of nasty weather stop me from looking ahead to the summer months. I … Continue reading

In my previous blog I filled you in on some of the best places to hike in the “Land of Aloha.” While most tourist tend to gravitate towards Oahu’s landmarks, historical sites, world class shops, and universally famous beaches there are some who travel to paradise for the chance to explore nature at its finest. Here now are a few more of Oahu’s most popular hiking trails: Manoa Falls Trail—Waterfall lovers this one … Continue reading

To Smack or Not to Smack? What is the Answer?

I was recently asked to be a radio talk back guest on smacking children. The young female presenter gave the following scenario: A young mother, on her way home from work and after picking up here 3-year-old daughter from day care, stopped to choose a DVD. While cruising around the isles attempting to choose her only entertainment for the week, her young daughter starts pulling videos off shelves and throwing them at her mother. The mother smacked the child, one hard swift smack on the bottom, paid for the DVD in her hand and left. The young video store attendant … Continue reading

Marriage & Love; Love & Marriage

Sometimes we forget that love and marriage both take work. When we are engaged to be married and planning our wedding ceremony, we think the sky is the limit. We know if we aim for the moon, even if we miss – we’ll still be among the stars. We understand, above all else, that we love each other. This is a thought that we need to remember, because that love can sustain us in the best of times and the worst of times. The following is a bit of a personal glimpse, but it was the best way I knew … Continue reading
